Active Family Holidays in Algarve and Lisbon: My Hands-On Press Trip Experience

While our press trip to Portugal featured relaxation, dining, and downtime, we also dove into active adventures to showcase ideal family outings in the Algarve and near Lisbon.

Active Family Holidays in the Algarve

Our day kicked off early with a flight, leading to an exhilarating horseback ride through the Algarve's woods by late afternoon. The press trip offered golf or riding—naturally, we chose horses. It had been over a decade since my last trail ride, and this one cleared my mind beautifully.

Horseback Riding in the Algarve on Day 1

Pinetrees Riding Centre, just a short drive from Martinhal Quinta Family Golf Resort, exemplifies professional equestrian operations, especially for newcomers. We completed forms, donned provided gear (breeches, chaps, boots, helmet), and began with a skills assessment by owner Beverly Gibbons. I passed quickly and rode out with instructor Christian. The others followed soon after. The thrill lingered for days—a highlight for active family holidays.

Mountain Biking on Day 2

Despite lingering muscle soreness from riding, I mounted a mountain bike the next day. Martinhal resorts easily arranges bikes for all ages, and our guide, a Belgian cycling enthusiast on sabbatical, led the way.

These activities are accessible from various accommodations, like Interhome vacation rentals nearby with bike hire options.

Cycling suits active family trips: uphill climbs, downhill thrills, sandy trails, and paved paths. Stunning viewpoints made it worthwhile, even for a non-cyclist like me. It banished any prior hangover too. Tag along younger kids or let them rest briefly for family-paced fun.

Active family travel extends beyond sports—sightseeing counts too. On Day 3, we drove from Algarve to Lisbon, as detailed in my itinerary.

After a three-hour drive, we unwound with meals, recovery, and massages. Mine was timely amid post-ride and bike soreness.

Martinhal's service shone: post-massage, the therapist thanked me. I quickly corrected her amid infused water and nuts—explaining my return desire. Relaxation balances active family holidays.

Day 4 brought regional excursions amid rare fog (Portugal boasts 300 sunny days yearly). Ideal for my 40+ skin, though views suffered.

Visit to Palácio da Pena

In Sintra, fog unveiled the Disney-esque Palácio da Pena, a former royal summer palace. It felt like a fairy tale—kids would adore it for semi-active family days.

Our guide highlighted breathtaking views (compare my foggy photo to clear-day shots).

Need I say more?

Interiors proved equally enchanting, yielding great photos.

Lunch at Martinhal Cascais, followed by playground energy-burning. Afternoon clearing allowed a Cascais stroll: casino, beach, vibrant vibes. Spot the local Manneken Pis nod.

Tip: Explore Porto and surroundings too.

Lisbon on Day 5

Lisbon blends active family holidays with culture and urban energy. We toured the upcoming Martinhal Chiado hotel (previewed previously) and roamed as bloggers.

From panoramic vistas to lovers' locks (like Amsterdam's Leidsegracht or Florence's Ponte Vecchio), options abound. The entry monastery wows.

This bridge mirrors romantic traditions elsewhere.

Cap it with a must-see tower view—essential for active itineraries.
