Global GFK Study: 59% Prefer Relaxing Vacations Over Active Ones

A GFK study across 17 countries shows that 59% of people prefer vacations centered on relaxation and downtime, compared to 35% who favor active holidays filled with activities and sights. Just 6% are undecided on their vacation style.

Globally, men and women show similar preferences, with 60% of men and 58% of women opting for relaxing trips. Both genders are evenly matched at 35% for active vacations.

In the Netherlands, 55% choose relaxing holidays, 36% go for active ones, and 10% are unsure. Dutch women lean slightly more toward relaxation (57%) than men (52%), while men prefer active trips a bit more (38% vs. 33% for women).

Among Dutch respondents, those aged 20-29 are most active-oriented at 45%, followed by 50-59 (39%) and 15-19 (37%). Relaxation peaks with the 40-49 group at 60%, then 60+ (58%), 50-59 (57%), and 30-39 (55%).

Household children make a modest impact on Dutch preferences, aligning closely with global averages. Families with kids under 6 or 6-12 see 62% favoring restful holidays and over a third choosing active ones. With teenagers, relaxation dips to 57%, while active options rise to 39%.
