Millennials Prioritize Travel Experiences Over Home and Car Ownership: Expedia Research Insights

Millennials place greater value on enriching their lives through travel than on owning a home or car. A popular trend is crafting a 'travel bucket list,' with social media emerging as a top influence on destination choices—cited by 42% compared to other generations. Friends and family, consumer reviews from sites and blogs, and expert advice from travel organizations also play key roles. On average, they consult 3.7 sources before booking, more than any other age group, according to Expedia's research.

Two-thirds of millennials seek authentic travel experiences, such as uncovering hidden gems and immersing in local life. Yet social recognition is equally vital: one in three say enthusiastic comments from friends on vacation photos matter as much as the experience itself (versus 24% in other generations). Network validation helps mitigate disappointment risks, while 59% actively prioritize safety on trips.

Technology is seen as a travel enhancer by this generation. Sixty percent express interest in wearables for real-time notifications, 68% in smart suitcases trackable via smartphone, and 50% in virtual reality previews of destinations. Such innovative gadgets are highly sought after.
