Why Campers Favor Outdoor Cooking: Skottelbraai Leads the Way, Per Kampeer & Caravan Jaarbeurs

The allure of camping lies in its freedom to roam, discover new spots, soak up the sun, and enjoy great food. A Kampeer & Caravan Jaarbeurs survey reveals that 47% of campers use their caravan or motorhome's gas stove, but most cooking happens outdoors. The skottelbraai—a wok-style pan hooked directly to a gas bottle—tops the list at 23% for evening meals, edging out barbecues at 10%. Fully 51% prefer open-air cooking over onboard stoves, while over 20% cook under the awning to dodge odors and splatters in their gear.

More than 20% rate their built-in appliances highly, but upgrades are desired: 30% want extractor hoods, 18% more gas burners, plus ovens (35%) and microwaves (23%).

Most campers keep indulgences in check, yet 22% gain about 2 kg on holiday—often from wine (23%), cheese (13%), or ice cream (13%). Only 19% rush to lose it post-trip; 73% take it easy. “As long as it's gone by the next holiday,” one respondent joked.
