Everyone knows the Seven Wonders of the World—from China's Great Wall and Jordan's Petra to Brazil's Christ the Redeemer and Peru's Machu Picchu. Now, New Zealand scientists have pinpointed what many called an eighth wonder: the breathtaking Pink and White Terraces of Lake Rotomahana, vanished in the 1886 volcanic eruption.
In the 19th century, these terraces drew tourists worldwide. Cascading shelves of shimmering pink and white silica flowed down to the lakeshore, framed by steaming pools and delicate waterfalls. Recent geophysical surveys by experts from GNS Science confirm the terraces lie buried 10-15 meters beneath Lake Rotomahana, remarkably preserved under layers of ash. A funding campaign is underway for advanced archaeological dives to verify their condition after more than a century. Results could rewrite history.
