Camping Eden on Lake Maggiore: Honest Family Review for Kids Aged 9+

At the start of our holiday, we stayed at Camping Eden on Lake Maggiore. We enjoyed a relaxing week in Italy with our family of four, immersing ourselves in the culture and natural beauty of this stunning lake. Invited by Vacanceselect, we chose one of their safari tents—here's our detailed experience.

Lago Maggiore Camping Eden: Staying in a Safari Tent

We've visited Italy several times, but this was our first trip to Lake Maggiore and its surroundings. Straddling the Swiss-Italian border, the lake sits at the top of Italy. Our base was Camping Eden in Dormelletto, in the southern part of the lake—1000 km from Eindhoven.

The drive wasn't too congested, but 1000 km with kids is still a trek. We played road games and napped along the way. Arriving at the compact Eden site, we received a warm welcome at reception and were escorted to our safari tent, where the fun began.

As the photo shows, Vacanceselect's safari tent is inviting, with a spacious terrace and ample lounging area out front—perfect for our 9-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son! 😊

Facilities at Camping Eden on Lake Maggiore

We deliberately chose this smaller site after experiencing larger campsites before. With strong reviews, it promised a refreshing change.

Camping Eden offers essentials for family fun, though it's better suited to younger kids than those aged 9-16.

Swimming Pool and Animation

The pool is ideal for little ones. Our children splashed around briefly but soon moved on. It's quieter midweek; our daughter Lotte loved having it to herself.

In peak season, kids' entertainment includes mini-disco, geared toward younger children. Ours felt too old for it, though the team made it lively. Adults occasionally enjoy poolside events with drinks. 😉

Playground and Playing Fields

Near the entrance, you'll find playgrounds, table tennis, a football pitch, and volleyball court—all well-used. The site's size makes them accessible; older kids can roam safely.

The volleyball court, by our tent and the lake, hosted many family matches—boys vs. girls!

Pack mosquito repellent; lakeside evenings call for it.

Lake Maggiore

Direct lake access is narrow but sufficient, except busy weekends when locals arrive. Space abounds for lounging with the resident swans.

The kids loved the floating trampoline and swam with swans watching. Entry/exit is tricky—the 'beach' could be cleaner.

Restaurant and Lounge Area

Poolside loungers and chairs complement the affordable restaurant. Fresh morning bread rolls are available for tent breakfasts—a treat!

No on-site shop, but a massive supermarket is 200m away. A pizzeria nearby serves excellent pies.

The Atmosphere at the Campsite

Our Vacanceselect safari tent was in a row by the lake, mostly occupied by Dutch families with young kids. We enjoyed neighborly chats.

Weekends bring Italian regulars on permanent pitches—charming gardens evoke authentic Italy.

Italians are lively mornings and evenings, with afternoon siestas (quiet and car-free 13:00-15:00). Park outside beforehand—we learned the hard way! 😉

Water Sports Enthusiasts and Animal Lovers

Boat owners: The owner tractor-launches your vessel for easy lake access.

Dogs are welcome with walking paths. A downside: some owners don't clean up; we spotted waste on the beach.

The Safari Tents at Camping Eden

Fully equipped and spotless. Benches, complete kitchenette, powerful hot shower, comfy beds—everything for a great stay.

Prime location: morning sun, afternoon shade. Bed linen and towels included meant light packing—just clothes, books, and games. Love that simplicity!

Activities Near This Lake Maggiore Campsite

Plenty to explore nearby—more in a future post. Nature lovers, hikers, town explorers, and water fans will thrive.

We day-tripped to Val Grande glacier walks, Borromean Islands (Isola Bella, Isola Madre), local towns, and even Milan.
